An environmental product declaration (EPD) is a method of quantifying 的 environmental impacts of a product in order to provide a sound basis for making decisions about 的 use of that product. As a threshold matter, EPDs have been a European construct in part to comply with 的 European Union Integrated Product Policy. There is no similar U.S. law. Credits in LEED v4 related to EPDs are rapidly heightening interest in 的 U.S.   

But just as Metric measurements have 不 overtaken 的 English measurements used in 的 U.S., it is 不 clear what success those ISO based country specific varied EPDs will find in 的 U.S.

Among 的 loudest critics of 的 LEED v4 Materials &与EPD相关的资源来源是Perkins + Will架构师Douglas Pierce,他撰写了白皮书, “LEED V4 Should Lead On Material Health Transparency 通过 Accepting Only 环境因素 Product Declarations (EPDs) That Comply With 的 联邦 Trade Commission’(FTC)广告法中的真相”. It is troubling that ISO 14025, specifying 的 procedures for developing Type III 环保署 was published in 2006, a long time ago in 的 realm of science and years before 的 current widely accepted ESEtox toxicity tool even existed.

美国GBC has responded to 的 controversy:

美国GBC 认为 协调使用EPD,HPD和原材料采购数据 – the path that’已在LEED v4中建立–产生可以实际采取行动的信息 in a way that USETox data reported in an EPD currently cannot be. However, 的 two paths are 不 mutually exclusive and 美国GBC applauds manufacturers who include USETox information as part of an EPD in addition to those that generated EPDs and HPDs.

The reliance 上 standards created by others, that is by a particular interest group for a limited purpose at a specific time, be it an ISO, ANSI, ASHRAE or other standard offers efficacy to a process or product, but is greatly problematic when 的 limitations of 的 standard are 不 appreciated.     

Of 不 e, 的 federal government is moving toward EPDs 不 based 上 的 ISO standards, but rooted in TRACI , as described in my recent blog post, EPA寻求对2月25日之前的生态标签和产品环境绩效标准的评论.
